Lounge Electronic is downtempo music dressed in cocktail-bar polish: brushed drums, bossa and jazz harmony, dub bass, soft synths, muted horns, smoky vocals, and expensive-sounding space. It is more rhythmic and social than pure ambient, but less forceful than club house. The mood is urbane, relaxed, stylish, and often built for hotels, cafes, boutiques, and late-night radio.
History
The style grew from acid jazz, trip-hop, exotica revival, bossa nova, dub, and European downtempo labels. Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca, Thievery Corporation, St Germain, Air, Groove Armada, De-Phazz, Boozoo Bajou, Mo' Horizons, Nicola Conte, and Jazzanova made lounge electronic a major late-1990s and early-2000s compilation sound. It later folded into chillout, nu-jazz, deep-house warm-up sets, cafe playlists, and boutique hospitality music.
