History
The subgenre begins with extended early ambient works but becomes unmistakable in records and installations explicitly built for sustained occupancy—Eno’s long pieces, Roach’s uninterrupted deep-space constructions, Basinski’s loop-decay cycles, Rich’s sleep-cosmic marathons, and later infinite-feeling digital works. Longform ambient changed how listeners use music: not as a discrete object to “finish,” but as atmosphere to inhabit.
