It often moves slowly, but it can also ride a train rhythm or walking guitar figure. The singer's loneliness may be personal, social or spiritual. The feeling is not just sadness; it is being cut off from comfort.

History

Loneliness runs through early blues because migration, labor, segregation, incarceration and unstable relationships shaped the lives behind the songs. Blind Lemon Jefferson, Skip James, Lead Belly, Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin' Hopkins, John Lee Hooker and Howlin' Wolf each made solitude sound different. Later electric and folk revival performers kept lonesome blues central because it connects personal feeling to broader displacement.
