History
The style emerged from the 2010s convergence of alt-R&B, bedroom pop, SoundCloud, YouTube, low-cost DAWs, and indie artists absorbing D'Angelo, neo-soul, Prince, and 2000s blog electronics without entering traditional R&B industry lanes. Early and influential figures include How to Dress Well and Toro y Moi in adjacent experimental/indie-R&B spaces, while Steve Lacy, Omar Apollo, Cuco, Dijon, Still Woozy, Puma Blue, Yellow Days, and Boy Pablo helped define a warmer, guitar-based lo-fi R&B indie vocabulary. Its influence spread through playlists, TikTok, and home-studio culture, making soft-groove intimacy one of the default sounds of Gen Z alternative pop.
