Garage recorded deliberately filthy: hiss, clipping, blown-out tape and amp-in-the-red distortion that smear the song into a fuzzy roar, often with buried, melodic pop hooks underneath. Four-track and laptop production turns budget limits into an aesthetic of noise, haze and scuzz-coated melody.
History
Coalesced in the late 2000s as cheap home recording and bandcamp let bedroom and basement garage acts release blown-out tracks. Columbus's Times New Viking, Cleveland's Cloud Nothings and California's Wavves pushed the hiss-drenched, hook-buried sound, bridging 90s lo-fi tradition with the era's garage-punk surge.
