History

Anchored by The Roots, hip-hop's premier live band, and Tony! Toni! Toné!'s instrument-driven early-90s soul. Raphael Saadiq carried the ethos into a retro-soul solo career, reviving full-band recording as a deliberate alternative to sample-and-sequencer R&B and giving neo-soul its most concert-ready, ensemble-built wing.
