Pop built on writerly lyrics: narrative ballads, period settings, archaic vocabulary and characters drawn from novels, history and folklore. Melodies are often folk-tinged and chamber-arranged, but the lyric is the centerpiece — sea shanties, doomed lovers, vendettas. Songwriting as short fiction, dense with allusion and plot.
History
Anticipated by Leonard Cohen's and Ray Davies' wordy character studies, it became a distinct mode in the 2000s with The Decemberists' Melville-and-Dickens balladry, Joanna Newsom's epic verse and Neutral Milk Hotel's allusive narratives, prizing literacy and storytelling above hooks.
