History
Schubert effectively established the genre’s artistic prestige, and Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, and Strauss deepened it through cycles and poetically saturated miniatures. German-speaking salon culture, domestic music-making, and the rise of recital culture gave the genre a dedicated social frame, while twentieth-century lieder singers and accompanists preserved it as one of classical music’s most exacting arts of text and tone.
