History
Earlier German song existed, but the Lied became a major classical genre with Schubert and intensified through Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, Strauss, and later composers; recital culture and German-speaking literary prestige made it one of the most exacting repertories for singer and pianist, where every consonant, color, and modulation matters.
