Latin Trap Pop

tagStarted 2016Peak 2018-2020Last big hit still active

Latin trap's slow, menacing 808s and triplet hi-hats fused with pop accessibility: half-time Southern-trap rhythm under melodic, auto-tuned, often half-sung Spanish hooks. Moodier and sparser than reggaeton, it pairs streetwise verses with romantic or melancholic choruses, glossy enough for radio yet rooted in trap's dark, bass-heavy atmosphere.

History

Latin trap emerged in Puerto Rico around 2016, led by Bad Bunny, Anuel AA, and Ozuna adapting Atlanta trap to Spanish. As it crossed over, melodic hooks and star-stacked collaborations softened the sound toward pop. By 2018-2020 it dominated Latin streaming and blurred into urbano pop while keeping trap's distinctive slow, ominous low-end groove.
