The turn-of-millennium wave of Latin artists topping English-language pop charts: clave-tinged rhythms, brassy horns, flamenco-flecked guitar and bilingual hooks fused with glossy radio-pop production. Hip-shaking, celebratory crossover singles that brought salsa, merengue and Latin-pop flavor to mainstream U.S. audiences.

History

Ignited by Ricky Martin's 1999 Grammy performance and 'Livin' la Vida Loca,' the 'Latin Explosion' saw Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira and Marc Anthony cross into Anglophone pop almost simultaneously. The wave broadened Latin representation on US radio and laid groundwork for later urbano and reggaeton crossovers.
