Kwaito is post-apartheid South African township music built from slowed-down house beats, bass, chant-like vocals, street slang, fashion, dance and local attitude. It is less about technical rap than presence: crews and solo artists speak from the new urban youth moment, half celebratory and half critical. Kwaito's minimal grooves left space for language, swagger and social identity, making it the soundtrack of a generation negotiating freedom.
History
Kwaito emerged as apartheid ended and South African youth reworked imported house music into local township expression. Arthur Mafokate, Boom Shaka, Trompies, TKZee, Mandoza, Bongo Maffin, Zola and others shaped the sound through labels, television, dance and street culture. Some songs were politically sharp; others were party anthems. Kwaito later fed directly into South African hip-hop, Afro-house and amapiano.
