Kansas City swing is riff-heavy, blues-drenched, relaxed in phrasing, and relentless in groove, with head arrangements, tough rhythm sections, and soloists who sound like they could play until sunrise.
History
It developed in a nightlife culture where long jam-based performances encouraged blues forms, repeated riffs, and hard-swinging rhythm. Bennie Moten, Count Basie, Jay McShann, Walter Page, Lester Young, and Jimmy Rushing made it the most earthy, durable big-band dialect of the swing era.
