K-Pop R&B

The smooth, groove-forward wing of idol-pop: hushed verses, falsetto runs, finger-snap and muted-808 grooves, jazzy or alt-R&B chord voicings, and atmospheric synth pads. Vocals are breathy and melisma-heavy with stacked harmonies; tempos sit low and sensual. Less choreography, more mood - the Korean answer to PBR&B and neo-soul, often producer-driven and lyric-intimate.
History
Emerged as Korean producers absorbed Western alt-R&B (The Weeknd, Frank Ocean) around 2014-2016. DEAN, Crush and Zico's collectives built a moody, atmospheric Korean R&B that idol labels then folded into group b-sides and solo eras. Soloists and units spun it into a respected lane bridging the idol mainstream and the Korean indie-soul underground.
