K-Pop Experimental Pop

The art-pop edge of idol-pop: jarring structure, abrupt beat-switches, dissonant or unconventional chord choices, glitchy electronics, and concept albums with dense visual and lyrical worldbuilding. Hooks resist easy resolution; arrangements pile up reversed sounds, odd meters, and genre collisions. The idol machine pointed at avant-garde pop ambition rather than radio comfort.
History
SM's experimental streak (f(x)'s 'Red Light', 2014) and Red Velvet's bizarre 'red' concept tracks proved idols could sell avant-pop. BTS expanded it with concept-heavy worldbuilding, while (G)I-DLE, aespa's metaverse lore, and producers chasing structural surprise built a respected experimental lane where weirdness became a selling point, not a liability.
