The flagship idol-pop sound: maximalist productions stitching together multiple genres in three minutes - trap hi-hats, EDM synth drops, sung-rapped verses, soaring pre-choruses, and a chant or onomatopoeic hook. Choreography-first arrangements leave space for dance breaks. Slick mixing, layered group vocals, member-distributed lines, and English/Korean code-switching define the texture.
History
Coalesced under SM, YG, and JYP's idol factories from the late 1990s, matured with the second generation (2009-2012), and went global as BTS, BLACKPINK, EXO and TWICE topped Western charts in the late 2010s. 'Fourth-generation' acts (Stray Kids, Seventeen) pushed self-production and harder, more frequent concept resets through the 2020s.
