History
Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story (1989) and Smokey Joe's Cafe (1995) pointed the way, but Mamma Mia! (1999), stitching ABBA's catalog into a sunny plot, made the jukebox musical a global commercial juggernaut. Jersey Boys (2005) fused the biographical model with the Four Seasons songbook and won the Tony, and Rock of Ages, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical (2014), and & Juliet followed. Often critically dismissed yet enormously popular, the form turned catalog ownership into theatrical gold and became a reliable Broadway and West End business model; its casts revived classic hits nightly for new audiences.
