Juke is the fast Chicago club style between ghetto house and footwork, usually around 150-160 BPM with repetitive chants, raunchy hooks, four-on-the-floor or skip-step kicks, and dancers' call-and-response energy. It is less rhythmically fractured than footwork but faster and more stripped than classic house. Its records are built for skating rinks, high-school dances, house parties, and dance crews as much as formal clubs.
History
Juke emerged when Chicago ghetto-house DJs sped up tracks and made them serve new dance styles and neighborhood party circuits. DJ Funk, DJ Deeon, DJ Slugo, DJ Clent, DJ Milton, DJ Gant-Man, DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, and DJ Nate helped define the sound through Dance Mania, local mixtapes, and informal exchange networks. Footwork later became the internationally recognized abstract branch, but juke remains the broader Chicago party language that fed it.
