History
The style crystallized around David Arkenstone, whose Valley in the Clouds (1987) and subsequent concept albums framed new age as instrumental storytelling, and around German world-new-age bands such as Cusco, whose Andean- and globe-spanning records evoked distant places. Kitaro's Silk Road works and Karunesh's world-fusion journeys shared the ethos, and labels like Narada marketed the adventurous, imaginative wing of the genre. The approach fed later fantasy, exploration-game and cinematic-ambient music, and remains popular on streaming for focus, reading and imaginative escape.
