Joke Song Pop
tagStarted 1962Peak 1962-1976Last big hit still active
One-shot gag records built entirely around a single punchline or running bit, with no parody source and no recurring character. Spoken-word interludes, fake-laughing, dance instructions or shaggy-dog stories ride a thin pop or country groove. Disposable by design, but the best lodge a daft chorus so deep it outlives the joke and becomes a singalong.
History
Distinct from parody, the standalone gag record peaked in the 1960s-70s: Ray Stevens cut a string of comic hits, David Seville's pre-Chipmunk "Witch Doctor" topped 1958 charts, and Rick Dees' 1976 "Disco Duck" hit No. 1 spoofing a fad. Dr. Demento's radio show kept the one-off gag song alive long after radio largely abandoned it.
