The jazz quintet is the ideal bop/hard-bop unit: usually trumpet, saxophone, and rhythm section, balancing horn harmony, solo space, and tight ensemble clarity.

History

Quintets became the default modern-jazz format because they could state intricate heads, maintain contrast, and still leave room for deep solo development. From Miles and Clifford Brown to Horace Silver and Art Farmer/Benny Golson, the form became canonical.
