History

Scha Dara Parr's 1994 'Kon'ya wa Boogie Back' with Kenji Ozawa was the first Japanese rap hit. King Giddra (Zeebra, K Dub Shine) founded serious Japanese-language rap with 1995's 'Power from the Sky.' Producer Nujabes and Shing02 pioneered jazz-rap that seeded global lo-fi; KOHH modernized it, and Okinawa's Awich became the scene's leading figure, reaching Coachella in 2024.
