Extended, improvisational Southern rock built on the twin-guitar and slide language of the Allmans but stretched into long modal jams. Hammond organ, fluid Dobro/slide leads and a loose, exploratory rhythm section trade solos live; setlists vary nightly. Blues, gospel and funk feed open-ended grooves rather than tight three-minute songs.

History

Rooted in the Allman Brothers' improvisational legacy, the modern strain coalesced when Widespread Panic formed in Athens in 1986 and Warren Haynes and Allen Woody launched Gov't Mule in 1994. The jam-band touring circuit and festivals like Bonnaroo sustained it; Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi's Tedeschi Trucks Band carried the lineage forward from 2010.
