History
Grew from the early-90s jam-band circuit as groups blended fusion and soul-jazz with Grateful Dead-style open-endedness. Medeski Martin & Wood pioneered organ-trio jam fusion from 1991; John Scofield's A Go Go (1998) cross-pollinated it, and Soulive, Galactic and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones extended the sound. The scene thrives live, on festival stages and through relentless touring rather than radio.
