History
The label J-pop emerged around 1988 via Tokyo's J-Wave radio to brand contemporary Japanese pop against older kayokyoku. The 1994-1997 'TK era' under producer Tetsuya Komuro pushed dance-pop nationwide; in 1999 Hikaru Utada's 'First Love' became Oricon's best-selling album ever, while Ayumi Hamasaki and Namie Amuro reigned as charts diversified into the 2000s.
