Italy's synth-driven disco evolution: spacey analog keyboards, drum machines, melodic arpeggiated basslines, and emotive, often heavily-accented English vocals. Romantic and slightly melancholic under the glitter, it trades live strings for Roland and Korg textures, with hooky melodies and a futuristic, neon shimmer built for European clubs.

History

Coalescing in Italian studios around 1980 as disco went electronic, Italo Disco was producer-driven, often pairing session vocalists with fictional frontmen. It dominated continental clubs mid-decade and heavily influenced Chicago house and later synthwave. Den Harrow, Ryan Paris, and My Mine typified its dreamy machine-pop before house overtook it late-80s.
