Isochronic Tones
Located in 1 route
Functional audio using isochronic tones, single tones switched cleanly on and off at a regular rate to produce a distinct, evenly-spaced pulse intended for brainwave entrainment; unlike binaural beats they do not require headphones because the rhythm exists in the audio itself. The pulses are usually layered over ambient pads, drones or nature sounds to soften their mechanical edge. Production is precise and repetitive, tuning pulse rates to target alpha, theta or delta ranges across long, static tracks. The mood is hypnotic and utilitarian, aimed at focus, relaxation, sleep or meditation.
History
Isochronic entrainment drew on twentieth-century research into rhythmic photic and auditory stimulation and was popularised as a stronger, speaker-friendly alternative to binaural beats through purpose-built software such as Transparent Corp's Neuro-Programmer and the light-and-sound "AVS" devices developed by David Siever's Mind Alive. From the 2000s onward, brainwave-audio producers including Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, Kelly Howell and iAwake Technologies incorporated isochronic and monaural pulses into their entrainment albums, while YouTube specialists like Jason Lewis's Mind Amend built large followings for isochronic focus and sleep tracks. The form remains a staple of functional-audio channels and meditation apps, its claimed effects popular but scientifically debated.
