Island Pop is mainstream pop flavored by reggae, calypso, dancehall, beach folk, Pacific acoustic pop and tropical leisure imagery: offbeat guitar, light percussion, breezy melodies, warm synths, relaxed tempos and lyrics about escape, sunshine, romance or party calm. It is usually smoother than roots reggae and less club-hard than dancehall. The point is accessible paradise, whether that paradise is Caribbean, Hawaiian, coastal or imagined.
History
Bob Marley brought reggae language into global pop consciousness, while Jimmy Buffett built a U.S. island-leisure brand. UB40, Shaggy, Sean Paul and OMI made Caribbean-pop hybrids into major hits; Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz carried an acoustic beach-pop branch; MAGIC! and tropical-house-era pop brought the sound back into 2010s radio. Island pop keeps returning because it gives mainstream audiences rhythm, warmth and vacation fantasy without demanding deep genre knowledge.
