Hip-hop without rappers, conceived as standalone listening: long-form, cinematic producer albums built from sampled drums, breaks, and obscure vinyl. Moody, widescreen arrangements with movements and dynamics replace verses and hooks. The MPC and the turntable do the storytelling, foregrounding texture, mood, and crate-dug atmosphere.
History
Crystallized by DJ Shadow's 1996 Endtroducing....., recognized as the first album built entirely from samples, made on an Akai MPC60 and Technics 1200s. Pete Rock's instrumental sets and RJD2's Deadringer (2002) extended the producer-as-auteur model, proving beats alone could carry a full album and feed film, TV, and the wider beat scene.
