Noise rock wired to the machine: pounding drum-machine or metronomic live beats, sampled metal percussion, sheet-metal guitar and twin distorted basses, all clanging like factory equipment. Grimy, mechanical and corrosive—the abrasion of noise rock fused with industrial's repetition, electronics and dystopian menace. Vocals snarl over a relentless, dehumanized grind.
History
Big Black's drum-machine assault prefigured it; Cop Shoot Cop (NYC, formed 1987) crystallized the form with twin basses, found-metal percussion and samplers and no lead guitar. Godflesh in the UK and the Skin Graft / AmRep scenes pushed the mechanized-noise fusion through the late 80s and early 90s into a distinct corroded subgenre.
