Indie Synthpop is synthpop made through indie-rock and alternative-pop sensibilities: melodic vocals, analog or soft-synth hooks, drum machines, bright pads, and emotionally direct songwriting. It is usually less polished than mainstream dance-pop and less retro-strict than classic synthwave. The style can lean festival-pop, bedroom electronic, new wave revival, or sleek blog-era indie dance.
History
Indie Synthpop grew from new wave revival, electroclash, indietronica, and 2000s bands using synths as primary instruments. M83, Passion Pit, MGMT, CHVRCHES, Cut Copy, Hot Chip, Metronomy, Phoenix, Miike Snow, Chairlift, Empire of the Sun, and Future Islands made synth-forward indie pop commercially visible. Its influence continues in alternative pop, streaming-era synth playlists, and artists who want emotional band identity with electronic color.
