Indie Rock Pop

tagStarted 2002Peak 2006-2014Last big hit still active

Guitar-band indie rock written for the hooks: bright, propulsive riffs, four-on-the-floor or dancey drums, big chant-along choruses and earnest, melodic vocals. More polished and pop-leaning than scrappier indie rock, it foregrounds singability and momentum—jangle, palm-muted drive and arena-ready refrains—while keeping an indie band's identity and energy.

History

The post-Strokes guitar revival of the early 2000s spawned hook-forward indie bands—Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Two Door Cinema Club—who married danceable rhythms to pop choruses. Vampire Weekend's 2008 debut added Afro-pop sparkle; the lane thrived on festival stages and indie radio through the early 2010s before the genre's commercial peak ebbed.
