The style's modern roots include 1980s neo-psychedelia and the Paisley Underground—The Dream Syndicate, Rain Parade, The Three O'Clock, and The Church—as well as Spacemen 3, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and shoegaze-adjacent drone. In the 2000s and 2010s, Animal Collective, Deerhunter, The Black Angels, MGMT, Tame Impala, Temples, Pond, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard made psych a core indie language again, with Austin Psych Fest/Levitation, modular recording, and vinyl reissue culture reinforcing the scene. Indie Psych Rock influenced dream-pop revival, chillwave, psych-pop, garage psych, and modern festival rock by making texture feel as hooky as melody.
