The brightest, hookiest wing of indie: jangly or chiming guitars, buoyant melodies, sunny harmonies and upbeat, sing-along choruses. Sweeter and more polished than scrappy indie rock, it foregrounds catchy songwriting and feel-good energy with hand-claps, twee charm or radio-ready sheen. Cheerful, melodic and immediate, it trades grit and noise for irresistible pop instincts.
History
Traces to the late-1980s UK C86 jangle-pop scene, then bloomed in the 2000s blog era. Belle and Sebastian's literate twee bridged eras, and bands like Vampire Weekend, Phoenix and Two Door Cinema Club brought polished, danceable indie pop to festivals and charts, making the sunny, hook-first sound a 2010s mainstream staple.
