History
The style emerged as indie pop, alt-R&B, blog-era electronic music, and bedroom production converged in the late 2000s and early 2010s, alongside the rise of Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, James Blake, and Solange in adjacent alt-R&B spaces. Indie Pop-R&B's more pop-facing lane took shape through Blood Orange, Rhye, Wet, Kelela, Empress Of, Toro y Moi, Steve Lacy, Omar Apollo, Men I Trust, and Japanese Breakfast-adjacent grooves, with streaming playlists and festival lineups making the borders between indie, R&B, and pop increasingly porous. It influenced contemporary alt-pop by normalizing quiet groove, breathy directness, and R&B harmony without the old industry separation between "band music" and "urban" formats.
