Bright, jangling, tune-first pop descended from C86 and Sarah Records: chiming Rickenbacker guitars, brisk tambourine, melodic basslines and soft, often diffident vocals. Lyrics are literate and wistful, sometimes twee, romantic or bookish. Production is clean but modest, prizing melody and charm over force, polish or commercial sheen.
History
The 1986 NME C86 cassette named the scene; Britain's Sarah Records (1987-95) codified its shy, fey aesthetic. Glasgow's Belle and Sebastian and Postcard's legacy carried it into the 90s, while US labels like K and Slumberland nurtured a parallel 'twee' wing. Camera Obscura and others sustained it into the 2000s as a durable, anti-glossy melodic tradition.
