Indie Noise Rock is guitar-based indie rock that treats distortion, feedback, dissonance, and abrasive texture as central compositional materials rather than decoration. The sound often uses alternate tunings, scraped strings, overloaded amplifiers, pounding drums, shouted or half-buried vocals, and riffs that lurch, drone, or detonate instead of simply groove. It can be ugly on purpose, but the best records turn ugliness into architecture.
History
The style developed from no wave, post-punk, hardcore, industrial noise, and avant-rock in the early 1980s, with Sonic Youth, Swans, Big Black, Butthole Surfers, Scratch Acid, and Live Skull opening a path for abrasive guitar music outside metal. Labels such as SST, Homestead, Touch and Go, Blast First, Amphetamine Reptile, Matador, and Sub Pop helped circulate noise-rock records through indie networks, while the 1990s brought major influence from The Jesus Lizard, Unwound, Polvo, Drive Like Jehu, and early Blonde Redhead. Indie Noise Rock influenced grunge, math rock, post-hardcore, shoegaze noise, and later bands such as Lightning Bolt, METZ, Pissed Jeans, and A Place to Bury Strangers, keeping the question alive: how much damage can a song withstand and still be a song?
