Indie hip-hop is defined by independent-label ecosystems, non-mainstream aesthetics, and a refusal to reduce rap to one commercial template. Sonically it ranges from classic boom-bap to highly idiosyncratic art production.
History
Rawkus, Rhymesayers, Def Jux, Anticon, and many similar infrastructures shaped a robust parallel rap world. Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Brother Ali, El-P, Murs, P.O.S., and others made "indie hip-hop" both a business route and an aesthetic identity.
