Indie folk combines acoustic songcraft with independent-rock aesthetics: textured ambience, unusual vocal timbres, subdued drums, and a preference for mood over showmanship. It often sounds autumnal, spacious, and self-consciously handcrafted.
History
The style broke open in the 2000s as singers and bands working outside folk institutions drew on classic acoustic writing while embracing indie-poise understatement and boutique production. Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Iron & Wine, the Tallest Man on Earth, First Aid Kit, and Daughter each contributed a different facet—choral richness, haunted minimalism, brittle intimacy, or Nordic melancholia—to the genre’s canon.
