Indie Disco is indie dance with disco's groove language: four-on-the-floor pulse, octave bass, handclaps, string or synth shimmer, falsetto hooks, and relaxed party warmth. It is less aggressive than bloghouse and less rock-driven than dance-punk. The sound often feels like disco filtered through bands, boutique labels, and festival stages.

History

The lane grew from post-punk disco, DFA, French touch, nu-disco, and indie bands embracing club rhythm. The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, Cut Copy, Phoenix, Metronomy, Holy Ghost!, The Juan MacLean, Hercules and Love Affair, YACHT, Classixx, and Poolside made disco feel indie-friendly in the 2000s and 2010s. It remains useful for sunny club sets, indie dance playlists, and artists who borrow disco without becoming retro pastiche.
