History
The style traces back to 1960s bubblegum, girl groups, punk-pop, twee pop, and Japanese Shibuya-kei, but the indie version became clearer in the 1990s and 2000s through Bis, Helen Love, Tullycraft, The Apples in Stereo, The Go! Team, Architecture in Helsinki, Los Campesinos!, and later Kero Kero Bonito. Indie Bubblegum intersected with twee, electro-pop, blog pop, chiptune, and internet pop, often thriving where fans valued bright surfaces, fandom energy, and knowingly artificial sweetness. It influenced later hyperpop-adjacent indie and cute-but-smart alternative pop by showing that "manufactured" sounds can be used playfully by self-aware DIY artists.
