Indie Blues is blues filtered through indie-rock habits: stripped-down bands, fuzz guitar, minimal drums, raw vocals, lo-fi texture and a taste for eccentric style over virtuoso blues orthodoxy. It can be primitive, stylish, theatrical or noisy. The point is not perfect traditional execution; it is using blues riffs, call-and-response and rough emotional directness as material for independent rock identity.
History
The indie blues wave grew from garage rock, punk blues and alternative audiences rediscovering raw electric blues. The White Stripes and The Black Keys made stripped-down blues-rock visible to mainstream indie audiences, while acts like Black Joe Lewis, Benjamin Booker, Hanni El Khatib, Black Pistol Fire and Reignwolf pushed the sound toward soul, punk and fuzz-rock. It opened a blues-adjacent path for listeners who did not identify with formal blues scenes.
