Independent-scene art pop: bedroom-to-studio production with cinematic synths, treated vocals, lush reverb and conceptual visuals, but kept idiosyncratic and outside the major-label machine. Songs are atmospheric and hook-aware, often built on auteur personas and striking aesthetics — high-concept pop made on indie terms.

History

Coalesced in the late 2000s-2010s as Bandcamp and blogs let auteurs like St. Vincent, Florence and the Machine and Lana Del Rey build art-pop personas independently. Weyes Blood, Mitski and Caroline Polachek extended it, blending DIY ethos with elaborate, image-driven production and cult devotion.
