Illbient is dark, urban ambient-dub beat music from 1990s New York, mixing hip-hop, dub, noise, turntablism, industrial texture, and sample collage into uneasy soundscapes. It is slower and stranger than trip-hop, often using heavy bass, fractured beats, ominous loops, spoken fragments, and live-mix atmospheres. The mood is not relaxing chillout but polluted-city immersion.
History
Illbient formed around Brooklyn and downtown New York networks including DJ Olive, We, DJ Spooky, Byzar, Sub Dub, Badawi, Spectre, Bill Laswell, WordSound, Asphodel, and Soundlab. Red Bull Music Academy's oral history frames it as a scene where dub and hip-hop experimentalism met noise, multimedia, and chillout-room culture. Though the label was short-lived, the sound influenced abstract hip-hop, dark ambient, dubstep precursors, experimental club music, and the idea of the DJ mix as environmental fiction.
