Bright, high-energy idol pop performed by the fictional idol groups of idol-themed anime, sung in-character by voice-actor units and built for choreography, colour-coded members and mass singalong. The sound is maximalist J-pop: sparkling synths, four-on-the-floor and disco-funk grooves, key changes, call-and-response chants and stacked cute-voiced harmonies with a huge hook. History
Idol anime songs grew from the idol-obsessed pop culture of the 1980s, but the modern voice-actor idol unit exploded with Macross Frontier (2008) and Bandai Namco's The iDOLM@STER franchise, whose in-character groups charted nationally. Love Live! (2013) and its unit μ's turned the format into a multimedia juggernaut of concerts, games and arena tours, followed by Aqours, Walküre (Macross Delta) and the zombie-idol satire Zombie Land Saga's Franchouchou. Backed by Lantis and Bandai Namco, these projects made seiyuu-idol pop a dominant commercial force, filling venues like the Tokyo Dome and drawing a devoted global fandom through streaming and rhythm games.
