IDM
Located in 1 route
IDM is a broad label for intricate electronic music that came out of techno, ambient, electro, breakbeat, and experimental computer production. It often uses complex rhythm, melodic abstraction, unusual sound design, and listening-album structures rather than straightforward club utility. The term is widely criticized, but it remains a practical listener shorthand.
History
IDM took shape around Warp's Artificial Intelligence compilations, the IDM mailing list, Rephlex, Skam, Planet Mu, Schematic, and artists who moved techno into more reflective and intricate territory. Aphex Twin, Autechre, Squarepusher, µ-Ziq, The Black Dog, LFO, B12, Plaid, Boards of Canada, Mouse on Mars, Bola, Telefon Tel Aviv, Prefuse 73, and Richard Devine are central names. The style influenced glitch, laptop music, experimental hip-hop, ambient, and high-detail electronic pop.
