Bay Area party-rap at high RPM: hyperactive 100-110 BPM beats, blaring synth stabs, rattling hi-hats, sub-heavy slap and shouted, chant-along ad-libs ('go dumb,' 'ghost ride the whip'). Manic, dance-driving energy built for sideshows and turf dancing — a frenetic regional cousin to crunk, soaked in Bay slang.

History

Coined by Oakland's Keak da Sneak in the early 2000s, hyphy bubbled through Mac Dre and Mistah F.A.B. before E-40's Lil Jon-produced 'Tell Me When to Go' broke it nationally in 2006. Tied to sideshow car culture and turf dancing, the movement burned bright mid-decade, faded by 2010, and later seeded the Bay's 'new-funk' revival.
