Hymn Country is built from standard hymn repertory—"Amazing Grace," "How Great Thou Art," "Softly and Tenderly," and similar sacred songs—sung in country style. Simplicity is part of the point: steady tempos, clear diction, uncluttered accompaniment, and reverence over flash.

History

Because hymns were deeply embedded in southern Protestant life, country singers have always treated them as common inheritance. New hymn albums or one-off performances recur with every generation, from Tennessee Ernie Ford and Johnny Cash to Alan Jackson and Carrie Underwood.
