Houston Blues tends to be urban, guitar-led, and groove-conscious, with clear Texas phrasing but heavier contact with postwar R&B, club bands, and jukebox culture. Expect sharp electric guitar, rolling rhythm sections, and a mix of roadhouse grit and city polish.
History
TSHA marks Peacock and Duke-Peacock as central Houston institutions in the postwar period, with Don Robey’s clubs and labels helping shape the city’s blues and R&B profile. Lightnin Hopkins worked one side of the picture, while Johnny Copeland, Albert Collins, Gatemouth Brown, Joe Hughes, and others built a local electric language that fed both straight blues and soulful Gulf Coast crossover.
