Horror Synth uses analog-style synthesizers, ostinato bass, minor-key arpeggios, drum-machine pulse, and dread-heavy ambience drawn from horror and thriller scoring. It can be minimal and suspenseful like a slasher cue, or aggressive and club-ready like darksynth. The sound values tension, menace, texture, and cinematic memory more than conventional pop hooks.
History
Its roots are the 1970s and 1980s scores of John Carpenter, Alan Howarth, Goblin, Fabio Frizzi, Tangerine Dream, and later horror-score revivalists. The modern scene folded those influences into synthwave through Umberto, Zombi, SURVIVE, Disasterpeace, Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, Dance With the Dead, GosT, Power Glove, OGRE, and Antoni Maiovvi. Stranger Things, It Follows, horror reissue labels, and Bandcamp's dark synth scene helped make the style recognizable far beyond soundtrack collectors.
